REPLIEE Q1–A human-like android

Posted on March 26, 2009.

Which is the human? Which is the android? Which is the human? Which is the android?

On June 10, 2005, Hiroshi Ishiguru of Osaka University created Repliee Q1, a human like robot. Q1 blinks and appears to be breathing. Not only does Q1 look like a human, but it can also perform human like movements. For example, Q1 can block slaps, swat fast moving balls and snake through debris. Still, not all robots are perfect. It has glitch-reported “spasms.”

You may be wondering what the whole point of this robot is. Q1 was made to escort tour groups and watch after children. Still, many believe that this robot has crossed the fine line between cool and creepy. Would you trust a robot not to desert someone you loved in an emergency? What if it broke down? How do you feel about robots taking over jobs such as these? Would you want a robot in your home or school? Why or why not?

I wouldn’t want a robot in my house in case something went wrong and it went crazy. That would not be cool. Also I think that having a robot as a teacher wouldn’t be as effective because you couldn’t really ask questions unless it was really well created.

As someone who likes the new age of technology, i donnot like the new robot that has been created. All computers have issues, and so will this robot. Letting androids such as the Q1 will take jobs much needed by people, expecially in this economic down turn most countries are facing. I wouldn’t trust this robot with anyone I cared even slightly about. I wouldn’t want a robot on my house because there is a fine line between not wanting to work, and just flat out laziness, and most people have already crossed that line. I wouldn’t purchase one.

I wouldn’t want a robot my house. I agree with
the statement that the robot has crossed the
line between cool and creepy. I wouldn’t trust
it. I’ve seen waaay too many movies about
robots taking over the world and hurting people.
Also if it broke down it would probably cost a
lot of money to fix it.

i think a design of a robot is cool but i think it has the probabilaty of taking away some that are’s

I would trust a robot in an emergency with
someone I loved only if they were programed
to be able to handle an emergency. I fell that
if the econimy can handle it and people have
other well paying jobs, then its fine that
robots have those jobs. But if people need
jobs because robots are taking them then that
is not okay with me. I wouod like one in my
home to do the house work and help me with my
homework, just not in the schools other than
janiters.

I would not consider my children or anyone else i cared about, safe with just a robot. Androids have definently crossed the line, and now are begining to become frieghtning. Also, some accidents, and crimes, are stopped by the mutual want of human life, by the ones considering those crimes. You have a higher chance of being hurt or kidnapped when you are by yourself, because the assailant doesn’t want to deal with anyone you are with. More people will commit crimes if human life doesn’t hang in trhe balance. Also, a robot can be beaten by just giving it a powerful shock. Many more people could do this, than those that could killl someone, and still live with themselves. I would not like robots taking over jobs. Robots should be used only where human safety is a concern, or where high presicion is needed, or monotinous repeatability is required. I would be fine with robots in my home/school/workplace, to an extent. Everything needs moderation, including robotics.

i think that personaly this could be a dumest thing ive ever heard, because the econmy is already bad why do we need robots taking more and more the U.S citizen thier jobldnt

  15
April 6, 2009

with the bad econamy where is the money to found a robat going people are losing there jobs and we build robots to fix it the not the smartest way i think

  12
April 6, 2009

well…i think its just creepy.

like they said there is a very fine line and personaly
i don’t want a robot to do everything for me.
the more and more mechanical this world gets i
belive that someday we might turn into the humans
on “Wall-e”. i am totaly serious cause the less
we do for ourselves the less active we are and
america is already seing this in action.

so all-in-all i say therer are some things that
need to stay humanized.

Question: What are the extent of the spasms reported, how often do they occur, how long do they last, and what is the reason for them??

  14
April 6, 2009

okayyyy…that is just plain wird. I mean seriously after watching “i robot” i would never trust them or let them take over jobs. sence they look so life like what if some evil dude made them and programed them to attack people talk about scary. =(

i wouldn’t want a robot at home cause it
won’t be much help it will just be there with
out any job for it 2 do at home at school it
might be fun because it might help you with
your school work.

I think it would be cool to have a robot at my home or school as long as you can tell that it’s not exacatly human because if something looks human it’s easier to trust but i think it would be a bad decission to trust a robot becasue like any technology it will eventually brake down. plus even if it’s an android it will eventually be thrown away and will be forgotten and rust!

  18
April 6, 2009

i would not like to have a robot as a teacher because then what would happen if the robot has a spasm and hits a child or if it breaks down and the kids have to wait to get another person or robot to re-teach the subject

  23
April 6, 2009

I honestly think robots would be cool…if they actually looked like robots, otherwise it would get creepy and you wouldn’t be able to tell if a human was a human or if a robot was a robot. But robots taking over human jobs is not cool. Then how are we going to make money. I think robots should just be used for military and industrial purposes.

April 6, 2009

okayyy…that would be horrable i would never ever whant one in my house because that is just plain scarry, i mean specially after watching i robot. i dont want a roblt around me period.

  17
April 6, 2009

umm i think that its kinda cool but also a really bad idea. soon enough there will be more robots than humans on earth doing the things that we are just too lazy to do ourselves. i dont want thst to happen!

YEA I THINK I WOULD WANT TO HAVE A ROBOT IN MY HOUSE BECAUSE IT WOULD BE PRETTY FUN

I wouldn’t trust a robot with my life! I would
be afraid of it turning on me and tryin to kill me!
Ya it would be cool to have a robot do your chores for you so you can hang with your friends more, But like on I-Robot, the robots got the peoples trust and then tried to take over the world!!!

i think owning a robot is dumb and if we bought this other countries would think that we are lazy

  45
April 6, 2009

I wouldnt like robots to be in homes a schools all computers have glitches and what if there was an emergency and the robot broke down? And people are right they would take jobs away from people and that wouldnt be fair especially with the terribla enconomy. Besides whats the point in them you probably ask them questions

  48

i would not want one in my house.

I would not want a robot in my house in case something went wrong with the robot. If a robot took those jobs, people would actually lose their jobs because of that. Also, if a robot was a teacher, a student probably couldn’t have an answer very well.

i totally want a robbot in my house that would
be so cool only i geuss it would be anoying
after a while

  57
April 6, 2009

I personally woudlnt want a robot in my house because there really wouldnt be much for it to do and it would be pretty creapy

  53
April 6, 2009

The robot sounds like a creeper..
It definetly crossed the line.

  61
April 6, 2009

I definetely think that robots are not the answers to all our problems. People are lazy enough and don’t need a personal machine to do their chores. Also, robots like Q1 will take jobs away from people and make our economy even worse. It would be cool though to make a movie of real robots! Still, I wouldn’t want robots like Q1 roaming around, because you wouldn’t know what’s a robot and what’s a human.

  58
April 6, 2009

i would not want robots in our life because
they don’t know what to do and plus once they
down there dead..plus they are slow to learn
things cause you have to like program it into
them!

April 6, 2009

I think robots are evil i mean what if they develop malevolent sentience (evil thoughts of their own) and decide that they deserve to run the world they are more powerful more specialized and everyone puts so much trust in them we wouldn’t realise thir evil until it was to late and like 30% of the human population would be dead that’s why i think we should only use computers they are more personal and can’t function without human input therefore they are more trustworthy than andriods

I would not want robot at all.
Humans would become quite lazy!:P

April 6, 2009

i think that thq Q1 is creepy. I wouldn’t be able to trust it because, it said it has “spasms” and what if it freaked out when it was watching your kid, or house sitting? and an something bad happened? it wouldn’t be able to save anything or help out if it all of a sudden had a spasm or broke. so i thik this “Q1″ is a cool idea just not for watching kids.. maybe for handling certin jobs, but thats it.

  86
April 6, 2009

i agree w/ 24 a bit it would be creepy and not as efective but i think it would be better to going to school and the teacher is adapted to your personal abilities and we would feel more comfterble, you could probably get your lessons in bed! that sounds ok, but we would probably have to have school when your sick too. but it would be better than a normal school in my opinion

  82
April 6, 2009

I would like a robot because then i wouldnt have
to do chores because it would do them all and
you dont have to pay it :D

  88
April 6, 2009

it would be sweet to have a robot because it could do all your homework.

  80
April 6, 2009

I wouldn’t want a robot to be depended on to protect my younger syblings or any of my family, because if it brokedown or something they would definately not be protected! :(

  223
April 6, 2009

having a robot as a teacher would be hard. you
couldnt ask it questions and get good answers.
you couldnt joke around with it. and it wouldnt
let you have extra time if you are gone or sick.
and if you had a robot tacher at your house
then it wouldnt matter if you were sick you
would still have to learn. these robots would
take over are jobs! there is not enough jobs
as there is. more people will go poor from not
working! so i dont think that we should have
robots

  71
April 6, 2009

I would want it so it could do my homework and
do work aeround the house
