EARTH DAY BLOG–STORY OF STUFF
Like the movies you are making for computer apps class, the Story of Stuff had a specific thesis supported by facts and opinion. The movie’s thesis involved sustainable extraction, production, distribution, and consumption. It also encouraged intervention–acting to change or modify current practices. The movie’s presentor, Annie Leonard, encourages people to power down and/or unplug electronics, waste less, talk about issues that you care about, and recycle.
What are some problems here at Monroe Middle that concern extraction, production, distribution, consumption, etc? In what ways are we wasteful or potentially wasteful? What solutions are there for problems that you identify. What questions or concerns did you have about the movie? What did you like or dislike?
Begin to dialogue about the questions above. Remember to write in complete sentences and refer to one another if possible. Restate, agree or disagree respectfully with each other!

A lot of people despose of school work papers in
the regular trash can rather than recycle them.
I guess this is a waste of trees. We can fix it by
recycling our useless papers.

At monroe Middle, our students waste a lot of things. Food is a big thing. Every once and a while i waste an apple or i throw away a half eaten sandwhich or something like that. We also waste things like paper. A lot of students print tons of paper in computer apps and could have just printed one page.

We use a lot of paper in this class. Some people have accidentally printed out a bunch of sheets. i didn’t like how she only talked about the negatives.

In general, the world is full of problems that are wastful and harmfull. Monroe Middle School uses WAY too much paper and we end up throwing a lot of it away. We could stop handing out less papers and recycle more. The movie was educational and I learned a lot from it.

In order too supply enough text books for each student, in each subject to take home, we are the cause for many trees to be chopped down. As students loose books they have to pay for them, but will money make that tree grow back…NO! Most of this problem can be solved by using online text books, and only have one class set that does not leave the room. And as for the students that do not have home access to the computer, will be issued a text book.

Besides “wasting trees,” I feel that the school
is a bit too indulgent with the usage of ink.
With both paper and ink, there is no attempt at
conservation, only recycling. I feel that this
situation is the same as with water: we recycle
it so as to keep water levels up, but we make no
attmept to conserve it. The recycling attempts
are precautions to slow down the usage of materials,
but do we realize that the amount of resources
are decreasing? With population growth, recycling,
combined with the decline of resources, will not
be enough to sustain the usage we use today.
We (anyone anywhere) may be forced to follow the
example of the Australians in the future, desperate
to conserve as much as we can…and why? Because
we allowed the resources to dwindle.

There are kids who just print something like … or AAA and then that paper can’t be used again so it goes to waste. Or when we make a mistake on a paper we through that paper out and get another one. But who hasn’t done that, we all waste but its how much we waste that counts.

I see a lot of people our age not only at school, but also in the general town of Monroe, just throwing their trash allover the ground. When we throw our trash onto the ground it’s all eventually carried by rainflow to streams, then rivers, then the Puget Sound. Puget Sound is in a ton of danger as of today. Every year the people of just western Washington deposit 1.3 billion tons of pollution into Puget Sound annually! We can help this by taking the time to throw our trash away, not putting toxins down our sinks, toilets, and showers, and checking our cars for leaks often. It wouold make such a positive ipact on the enviornment!

Some problems we have here are that at lunch people eat and drink things that could easily be recycled, but the school doesn’t provide recycle bins for lunch time. I know that lots of people at our school drink the vitamin waters that they buy from the snack bar, and we they finish that they just throw the bottles away, if we had recycle bins people could throw that empty bottles in there to help re-use things.
Something I didn’t like about the movie was that she made it seem like we throw so much away, 99% of the things we buy after six months. But it all depends about what she’s talking about, food containers, paper towels, and things like that all get thrown away. There’s no way someone could expect that to last for too long. But most things people don’t throw away. Like if I bought jeans, I wouldn’t throw them away six months later.

I agree with number 274 that some problems here at Monroe Middle School that concern consumption is that once we, as students, are done using paper, many of us do not recycle, even though we are told to do so again and again. A solution to this problem is that teachers could enforce the principle by making students pay for each paper that could be recycled, but isn’t. One question I had about the movie is why the government does not have very much power compared to the corporations. One thing I disliked about the movie is how there wasn’t very much talk about the good humans are doing to help our Earth, such as planting trees on Arbor Day.

Some problems are that we throw stuff away when it isn’t even been used all away. People just throw there lunches away even though half is still there. I say that they should not eat sneakily during class and just eat more. Also, we use paper like its nothing, we should use front and back of the sheets, and recycle them, and not throw them away. I also thought that the person in the move was really negative, she never talked about how most people are working really hard to stop the horrible things.I also wanted to learn more about the factories and how horrible they are so dangerous to the people working in them.=)

I dont thin monroe middle school is wasteful ofr potentially wasteful. we dont waste very much. we recycle, and dont use a lot of stuff at all.

We really don’t recycle here and we litter and throw trash on the ground. We could be more resourceful and use what we have wisely. Also, we could try not to break computers and stuff so we don’t have to throw it out.

i think one problem is at monroe middle school is that they make us use way to much paper and pencils and then all teh do is throw them away not recycle. I also think that they should not just throw away the food.

i dint like the movie because i really dont careeeeeee about that kind of stuff

I think at our school people litter to much. I agree with agree with that video because it shows how
wasteful americans are.

i think we have done too much damage to the world and it is too late for us to really get it back to the way it was a while ago. but the people who make consumer products dont care about what they do to the world, its just all wbout the money to them. and i honestly think that our world is only going to get worse from here because nothing is going to change, and alot worse at that.

I agree with the video that we should try harder to protect the Earth
